THREAT HUNTING • SHADOW AI • BYOD/MDM • DATA EXFILTRATION
Situation: Your employees are using AI. This is a fact. They are using *unmanaged* public LLMs on BYOD devices and installing *malicious AI clones* on MDM-managed laptops. This “Shadow AI” is your new #1 data exfiltration vector. Your MDM (Mobile Device Management) policy is blind to it, and your EDR is drowning in “noise.”

- The “MDM Fail”: An MDM is a *policy* tool (it enforces PINs). It is *not* a *threat hunting* tool (an MTD/EDR). It cannot see *what data* an employee is pasting into ChatGPT on their personal BYOD phone.
- Threat 1: “Leaky” AI (Data Governance Breach). Your employee pastes *proprietary source code* or *customer PII* into a public LLM. This is a GDPR/DPDP fine and *IP theft*.
- Threat 2: “Malicious” AI (Malware). Your employee downloads `chatgpt-pro-installer.exe`. It’s a Redline Infostealer that steals *all* their corporate session cookies.
- THE HUNT (The Playbook): You can’t stop the *use*, so you must hunt the *behavior*.
- Hunt 1 (Network): Hunt for *anomalous traffic* to AI APIs (`api.openai.com`, etc.) *from non-browser processes* (e.g., `powershell.exe`).
- Hunt 2 (Endpoint): Hunt for *anomalous processes* (`chatgpt-desktop.exe`) and *file staging* (`git-crypt.exe` running on a user PC).
- Hunt 3 (Behavior): Hunt for *anomalous data access* (e.g., one user suddenly reading 10GB from SharePoint).
- THE ACTION: You need a 24/7 MDR team to run this playbook.

Phase 1: The “Shadow AI” Problem (Why MDM & EDR Are Failing)
As a SOC Manager, your defenses are built on *visibility*. The “Shadow AI” problem is a *crisis of visibility*. Your C-suite *wants* AI, your employees are *using* AI, and your security stack is *blind* to it.
This is a two-front war:
- The MDM/BYOD Front (Mobile): Your MDM (Mobile Device Management) policy is a “compliance” tool. It can enforce a PIN and encrypt the device. It *cannot* perform Mobile Threat Defense (MTD). It has *zero visibility* into the data *within* the apps. When your employee on their personal BYOD phone (which has your corporate Outlook/Teams) copies PII and pastes it into the *public ChatGPT app*, your MDM sees *nothing*.
- The Corporate Endpoint Front (Laptops): Your EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) tool *has* the visibility, but it’s drowning in “noise.” It’s configured to see `chrome.exe` (a trusted browser) making a connection to `chat.openai.com` (a trusted website). This is “normal” behavior. It has *no idea* that the *content* of that connection is your entire proprietary source code.
You cannot “block” AI at the firewall. It’s a “whack-a-mole” game of IPs, and your employees will just use their phones. The *only* winning strategy is to *allow* it, *control* it, and *hunt* for the anomalies.
Phase 2: The Kill Chain (Malicious AI Clone vs. “Leaky” Legitimate AI)
As a SOC, you must hunt for two *different* kill chains that look similar on your EDR.
Kill Chain 1: The “Malicious AI Clone” (The Infostealer)
This is a classic malware attack dressed in new clothes.
- Initial Access: User Googles “free ChatGPT-5 desktop app” and downloads `chatgpt5-installer.exe` from a malicious site.
- Execution: The user runs the installer. It *might* install a real AI app, but in the background, it also executes an infostealer (like Redline or Raccoon).
- Defense Evasion: The EDR *might* see this, but attackers are now using fileless TTPs (PowerShell) to run the stealer in-memory.
- Collection & Exfil: The infostealer *instantly* steals all saved browser passwords, session cookies, and crypto wallets.
- The Breach: The attacker now has your employee’s *active, authenticated session cookie* for M365, Salesforce, and GitHub. They *bypass MFA* and are logged in *as your employee*.
This is a Session Hijacking attack.

This is a *compliance* nightmare. The “attacker” is your own *trusted employee*.
- The “Act”: Your developer, working on a deadline, copies 10,000 lines of your *proprietary source code*.
- The “Tool”: They paste this *IP (Intellectual Property)* into the *public* ChatGPT and ask, “Please find the bug and refactor this.”
- The “Exfiltration”: The developer just *exfiltrated* your IP. It is now on OpenAI’s servers, *and it is now part of their training data*. Your #1 competitive advantage is gone.
- The Risk: This is a catastrophic PII breach (if it’s customer data) and a total IP theft. Your EDR/MDM saw *nothing*.
Phase 3: The SOC Manager’s Threat Hunting Playbook (The “Hunt”)
Your “block” strategy has failed. Your new mandate is to *hunt*. You must assume “Shadow AI” is *already* on your network. This is your 3-part playbook.
Play 1: Hunt for Endpoint & Process Anomalies
This hunts for the “Malicious AI Clone.” You need a good EDR (like Kaspersky) to run these queries.
- Hunt Query (Process): “Show me all *new* executable names *not* on my software baseline. (e.g., `chatgpt.exe`, `gemini-app.exe`, `ai_tool.exe`).”
- Hunt Query (Behavior): “Show me *any* process (like `chrome.exe` or `powershell.exe`) that is reading *unusual* files.” (e.g., `browser_cookies.db`, `Local State`). This is a classic infostealer TTP.
- Hunt Query (File Staging): “Show me *any* user process spawning `zip.exe`, `tar.exe`, or `7z.exe` on a *large* directory (e.g., `C:\Users\[user]\Documents`).” This is “data hoarding” *before* exfiltration.
Play 2: Hunt for Network & Data Anomalies
This hunts for the “Leaky” AI TTP. This is your *best* signal.
- Hunt Query (DNS/Firewall): “Show me *all* connections to known AI APIs (`api.openai.com`, `api.anthropic.com`, `gemini.google.com`).”
- THE REAL HUNT: Now, *filter* that list. “Why is our `SQL-DB-Server-01` talking to `api.openai.com`?” **This is your breach.** “Why is `powershell.exe` on a user’s laptop making an API call to `api.openai.com`?” **This is your breach.**
- Hunt Query (DLP): “Show me all *large* (1MB+) HTTP `POST` requests to these AI domains.” Your user isn’t *typing* 1MB of text. They are *uploading* a file. This is your PII or IP leak in progress.

Phase 4: The “Contain, Harden, Respond” Plan

Isolate the host *immediately*. Use your EDR to “contain” the device, blocking all network traffic *except* to your analysis tools. This stops the exfiltration in its tracks.
