Situation: The North Korean APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) group Kimsuky has weaponized **Microsoft’s own tools** to create an “invisible” and highly persistent backdoor. This TTP is “Living off the Land” (LotL) and “Living off the Cloud” (LotC), making it completely undetectable by your legacy AV (Antivirus) and next-gen EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response).
This is a decision-grade CISO brief. This TTP *bypasses* your entire security stack. Kimsuky uses a malicious `.LNK` file (which your email filter allows) to execute `regsvr32.exe` (a *trusted* Microsoft binary). They then deploy a fileless backdoor that uses *legitimate* Microsoft 365 or Azure services (like Outlook API) as its C2 (Command & Control) channel. Your EDR is blind.

Phase 1: The “Trusted” Trojan (Why Your EDR is Blind)
The **Kimsuky APT** (North Korea-nexus) is known for its extreme operational security. They *never* use obvious malware. They rely 100% on **LotL (Living off the Land)** techniques to avoid detection.
Here is the TTP that bypasses your EDR:
1. The Phish & LNK/JS Execution
The attacker sends a highly-targeted **spear-phishing** email. The payload is either a malicious **macro-document** or a **LNK/JS file in a ZIP** (Gootloader TTP). The user clicks, gaining the attacker a *low-privilege* foothold.
2. The “Trusted” Binary Bypass (T1218.003)
The attacker *does not* run `malware.exe`. They use a *legitimate* Windows utility—often **`regsvr32.exe`** or **`mshta.exe`**—to execute their fileless payload.

- **C2 Command:** The malware sends a message to the attacker’s *external* email address with a *unique subject line* (e.g., “Status Report: Host Aquired”). The subject line *is the C2 command*.
- **Data Exfil:** The malware attaches the *stolen PII/CUI* as a base64 encoded document to the *same legitimate email* and sends it out.
Your Firewall/DLP sees: 1) A *trusted, signed* Microsoft binary (`outlook.exe`) communicating with **2) A *trusted, whitelisted* IP address** (`outlook.office365.com`). The traffic is HTTPS encrypted. Your DLP *cannot* inspect the content.
Your entire security stack sees this as **”normal activity”** by your **”trusted employee.”**
Exploit Chain (Engineering)
This is a Trusted Process & Trusted Channel TTP. The “exploit” is a *logic* flaw in your EDR Whitelisting policy.
- Trigger: Phish → `.LNK` → `regsvr32.exe` (Trusted) loads malicious `.DLL` (Fileless Payload).
- Precondition: EDR *whitelists* `regsvr32.exe` and network traffic to `*.office365.com`.

Mitigation & Hardening (The CISO Mandate)
This is a Zero-Trust Architecture failure. This is the fix.
